Extract differences in two images

Postby redact207 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 1:53 pm

Hoping someone can provide some basic pointers to this problem, as my approach doesn't seem to be working.

I have two images - one background, another of the same background with an additional object. I'm wanting to subtract the former from the latter so that all I am left with is the new object. My webcam is auto brightening the second image so that the background can't be detected, ala:
1.jpg
background
1.jpg (7.86 KiB) Viewed 3198 times

2.jpg
foreground
2.jpg (16.35 KiB) Viewed 3198 times

I've applied the bg/fg motion detection algorithms outlined by Andrew at http://www.codeproject.com/KB/audio-video/Motion_Detection.aspx, but this is failing due to the brightness difference between the two images.

Hope someone can suggest a better way forward - the brightness is something I need to deal with so I can't disable this setting. :?
